Synchronous Wood Grain: What the Term Means for a Specification
"Synchronous" is one of the most used and least explained terms in decorative film. It means the printed grain pattern and the embossed texture are registered to each other: the printed pore sits exactly under the physical pore. Run a fingertip across a synchronous grain and the texture follows what your eye is reading. On a non-synchronous film the two are independent, which is why it can feel slightly hollow at close range.
In practice, synchronous grain matters most on surfaces people touch and see at close range: cabinet doors, wardrobe fronts, reception desks and furniture tops. On a wall two metres away, the difference is much harder to see — which is why an honest specification spends the synchronous budget where the hand goes, not across the whole project.
Three things to check before approving a synchronous grain
Registration consistency across the roll. The pattern-to-emboss registration has to hold across the full width and the full length, not only on the sample. Ask for the roll-end condition, not just an A4.
Direction. Wood grain is directional. Confirm the intended direction with the joiner before cutting, because a panel fitted the wrong way round reads as a defect even when the film is perfect.
Finish level. A synchronous grain is often specified with a matt, low-sheen surface. High gloss under direct light flattens the texture visually, which works against the reason for specifying synchronous in the first place.
Semi-transparent vs opaque grain
A semi-transparent grain lets the substrate tone through, which is used on lighter species where a fully opaque print would look flat and synthetic. It gives the most convincing result on a light, uniform substrate. An opaque grain is more forgiving: it covers substrate variation and is the safer choice for a refurbishment over an existing surface.
Both are available in the P800DM PVC range, and the same grain families carry across to the D1500 PVC-free range for projects where the material policy rules PVC out.
