Furniture Refurbishment: Film Requirements From Prep to QC
Hotel and office refurbishment teams choose film over replacement because downtime is money. But a failed laminate costs double - labor to remove it plus labor to redo it. These are the requirements we give contractors before their first roll ships.
Decorative film refurbishment succeeds or fails before the film touches the surface. This guide compiles the requirements we share with hotel, office and retail refurbishment contractors who use our P800DM and D1500 lines - use it to brief your installation crew and to write your own method statement.
1. Substrate requirements
- Rigidity: the surface must be structurally sound - film covers, it does not repair. Delaminating veneer, crumbly MDF edges and oil-filled surfaces must be repaired or replaced first.
- Smoothness: any texture deeper than the film gauge will telegraph through. Fill and sand to 240-grit minimum on visible areas.
- Cleanliness: degrease with isopropyl alcohol or a neutral cleaner; silicone polishes are the number-one cause of adhesion failure on refurbishment jobs.
- Dryness: moisture content of wood substrates below 12%. Fresh concrete or plaster walls need a moisture barrier primer - this applies to our straw-woven wall covering installations as well.
2. Environmental conditions during installation
Specify in your method statement: room temperature 15–30°C, relative humidity below 70%, film and substrate acclimatized in the room for at least 24 hours before application. Cold film is stiff and the adhesive never reaches full tack; hot film stretches and distorts the grain.
3. Adhesive system - match to the job
| Application | System | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flat panels, doors, wardrobe interiors | Self-adhesive (pressure-sensitive) film | Fastest; squeegee from center out; overlap seams 2–3 mm |
| Large horizontal runs, desktops | Film + contact adhesive or PU adhesive | Full-spread bonding resists edge lift on wide panels |
| Profile edges, postforming | Profile-wrap grade film + profile wrap machine | Requires wrap-grade backing; confirm gauge with us before ordering |
Our stock film is supplied with pressure-sensitive backing as standard. If your process needs wrap-grade or transfer-adhesive construction, say so in the inquiry - construction is confirmed at quotation, not at delivery.
4. Fire and safety documentation on refurbishment tenders
Refurbishment tenders increasingly ask for surface-material documentation. Our position is straightforward: we document only what the current batch evidence supports — no unevidenced compliance claims. What we can attach to every shipment is the SGS test report covering VOC (French A+ on D1500), formaldehyde (not detected, GB 18580) and 19 heavy metals (EN 71-3 scope) - request it via the SGS report guide.
5. Application technique checkpoints
- Measure and cut with 10 mm overhang on all sides; trim after the panel is fully bonded.
- Peel-and-stick progressively: release no more than 200 mm of liner at a time to keep the adhesive clean.
- Squeegee from center outward at 45°, working air toward the edges; prick stubborn bubbles with a fine needle and press flat.
- Seams: on surfaces wider than the 1.22 m roll, plan seams away from sightlines and keep grain direction identical across panels.
- Post-heat edges with a heat gun on wrapped corners (60–80°C) to set the adhesive memory.
6. QC and handover
- Adhesion pull check after 24 h on a discreet area - no lift at edges or seams.
- Grain alignment audit across adjacent doors and drawers; tolerance agreed in the method statement.
- Retain batch samples: keep one offcut per lot with the project file for future repairs and warranty arbitration.
7. Ordering math for refurbishment projects
Budget by usable area, not by roll label: at 1.22 m width, one linear meter covers roughly 1.17 m² after trim losses. Add 10–15% cutting waste on panel work and up to 25% on pattern-matched door faces. The commercial frame stays flat for project buyers: in-stock items from 1 roll, production time confirmed per order, and swatches before you commit - see the sample process if you are pricing a tender right now.
Frequently asked questions
Can decorative film go over existing laminate or painted surfaces?
Yes, if the surface is sound, sanded matte and degreased. Glossy laminates need scuff-sanding; failing paint must be stripped. Adhesion is only as good as the layer beneath.
What temperature range can installed film withstand?
Installed film performs in normal interior climates. Avoid sustained exposure above 60 degrees C and direct high-heat sources such as cooktop splash zones - specify a heat-resistant overlay or metal sheet there.
Is the film removable later without damaging the substrate?
Pressure-sensitive film can be lifted with gentle heat for future re-refurbishment; some adhesive residue on raw MDF is possible and is a known trade-off versus replacement. Test on a discreet area first.
Do you provide installation training for refurbishment crews?
We provide written installation SOPs and application videos with every wholesale order, and our technicians advise on first-project questions by email or video call.
How much extra film should we order for waste?
Plan 10-15% cutting waste on flat panel work and up to 25% where grain must be matched across door faces.
